The adventure has already begun....we are so lucky!
Air North is definitely my favourite airline after todays flight. Well some of the credit for that has to go to Lynda for securing us seats in an exit row and to Alex McDougal who ended up as our seat mate for the flight. What an interesting and delightful young man. Alex is 28 and was born and raised in Whitehorse. After a career in junior hockey he secured a scholarship at Okanagan College where he earned his red seal in welding. Since then he’s been working toward a second designation as a millwright. But don’t despair he does so much more than work! He’s captured a beautiful balance in his young life between work and play and on top of that it was a joy to hear him talk so freely about his feelings. His story is one of adventure and he comes by that honestly. He loves his family deeply and was happy to share their story with us. His grandfather was a sea boat captain and Alex is proud of the fact that he was the first First Nations sea boat captain in Yukon history. He remembers his grandpa well and told us about how he would call him Zander (short for Alexander). Alex’s dad is from Saskatchewan and left for a final whirlwind motorbike adventure with his buddy before post secondary school. To cut to the end of the story....when he and his buddy arrived in Whitehorse dusty from their long trip....they found themselves in a bar where Alex’s mom was tending bar. And the rest is history....their eyes met across the room and they’ve been together ever since. His dad talks about moving here to live with his mom in a teepee for the first two years of their life together. I heard that and could only think about how cold it might have been in the winter but Alex said his dad assures him that even though it was cold outside....the inside of that tent was toasty warm as it was insulated by the snow and their love for one another too.
But back to Air North.....I also like them because their staff are happy, they serve food (for free) on every flight and nearing the end of each flight they serve everyone a freshly baked warm from the oven chocolate chip cookie that is delicious! Put all of that on top of an exit aisle seat and an entertaining seat mate and you have “love at first flight”. LOL. :-)
We arrived in Whitehorse at 11:00 pm and the sun wasn’t even down yet....it was almost as bright as if it had been 11:00 am! We got our rental car and headed off to find our Air B & B. What a wonderful little spot it is! About 10 minutes outside of the city our views are stunning and it feels like we’re already on a great adventure. We’d gotten the code for the door and so were able to let ourselves in to our room where we were greeted with comfy beds, stuff for breakfast, and a giant 2 person jacuzzi. So what else could we do but don our bathing suits and climb into the tub in an attempt to trick ourselves into thinking it was time to go to sleep. It is now 12:39 and although I’m starting to think I might be able to sleep soon....the light outside certainly does play a little havoc with your mind.
This adventure is going to be a great one....I can already feel it in my bones! And....it will be made even more memorable by the fact that our flower friend “flor” has come out of storage (the last trip he made was the copper canyon in Mexico and the Mediterranean in 2010-11). He’s already found his way into several of our photos and Alex (on the plane) was excited to get to meet him and hear about some of his travel adventures.
Tomorrow’s going to be a Whitehorse day.....excited to see what it has to offer.
Till next time,
Lynda and Lorrie
